A day in the life: Tristan Cameron Harper

A normal day for me when I’m not out on the mountains, travelling or exploring is still a pretty active day.

I’m up first thing at 5.30am. I have a glass of water, a small stretch then spend 20-30 minutes meditating.  I take my dog Nacho out for a 20-30 minute walk and then feed him his breakfast, whilst l play catch up on my work emails and my porridge is cooking.

After I’ve had my porridge (with chia seeds, spirulina, turmeric, sunflower seeds, raspberries, hemp seeds, bee pollen and a sprinkle of coconut sugar) I normally start doing more work. This might be looking at maps, scouting locations for projects, researching ideas, getting my kit ready, doing a refresher check of the weather conditions and creating my action plan, before hitting the road. I need to be physically fit, but I also need to be mentally alert and be able to concentrate and multi-task.

Often by the time I have done this, it’s lunchtime for Nacho and I. I make myself a huge salad with couscous, broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, spinach, mushrooms and maybe add in chicken or fish, with balsamic dressing and hummus. After lunch I take Nacho for an hour and a half walk and just take in everything the great Scottish outdoors has to offer. Then I drop the wee guy off to chill-out whilst I go running (if he’s not out running alongside me) or head to the indoor climbing wall if the weather is too bad or my friends are not around  to climb outside.

After 1-2 hours of climbing I normally have a cup of tea, a Nairn’s Oat Bar (the Mixed Seeds and Protein one is my favourite) or a few Nairn’s oatcakes to help keep me going. My career path means that I have always had a demanding physical routine and I really enjoy it, as it brings so many health benefits.  It also helps keep me in shape to do what I need to do – I’ve gotta keep things moving and maintained! I head to the gym and do an hour-long workoutand after this, it’s back home for dinner.

For dinner I tend to have the same salad, but this time not as big. I’ll mix it up and add rice or couscous, lentils and choose between tofu, chicken or fish. Whilst this is happening Nacho is eating his own dinner and re-boosting his energy levels as he’s pretty active himself! After we’ve both eaten we head out for another walk, then back home for a little dessert. Nacho gets his carrots (which he loves!) and I have some yoghurt with locally-sourced honey and some of Nairn’s new Coconut & Chia oat biscuits crumbled on top. Then I normally chill out for the rest of the night, editing any unfinished work, researching more projects, reading, or head back out to hang out with friends.

Before bed, I might prep some overnight oats for tomorrow’s breakfast to keep things varied. They’re really simple, taste great and you can easily take them with you on your next adventure!
